The other day I stumbled across that classic scene from Miss Congeniality, the one where a pageant contestant is asked, “Describe your perfect date.”
She beams and answers, “That’s a tough one… I’d have to say April 25th, because it’s not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket.”
Cue the confused looks. Cue the laughter.
She heard “date” and thought calendar, not connection.
But as silly as it is, it made me pause.
Because don’t we do a version of this all the time?
Don’t we often answer on autopilot, without checking in with what’s really being asked, what’s really going on inside us, or what the moment actually needs?
Where Your Energy Goes, Your Answers Follow
If I asked you right now, “What’s your perfect date?” where does your mind immediately go?
Maybe to your favorite holiday.
Maybe to the winter solstice, the last supermoon, or another moment that carries meaning.
Maybe to a cozy night in with your favorite person, soft blankets, and fuzzy socks.
Whatever is taking up the most space in your heart tends to shape how you hear the question.
Your mind follows your energy.
Your answers follow your focus.
Which means how you interpret a question has everything to do with what you’re already carrying.
The Power of the Pause
We’re living in full, tender, overstimulated times.
Instead of resisting that, what if we let it invite us into deeper awareness?
The next time someone asks you a question, any question, try this:
- Take a breath.
- Feel your feet on the ground.
- Check in with the moment.
- Ask yourself: What’s really being asked here?
Is it playful?
Is it vulnerable?
Is it a bid for connection?
Is it an indirect ask for support?
That micro-pause shifts you from reacting on autopilot to responding with presence.
It moves you out of old communication patterns and into intentional, heart-led dialogue.
Coherent Communication: When Your Heart and Words Match
Coherent communication is simply this:
When your head, heart, and words are moving in the same direction.
It asks you to:
- Listen without jumping ahead.
- Notice your assumptions before they become your answers.
- Slow down enough to respond from truth instead of tension.
- Consider how your words land with the other person.
When we rush, we tend to:
- Hear only part of what’s being said
- Fill in the blanks with our own stories
- Miss opportunities for clarity and connection
One simple question “Can you tell me what you meant by that?” or “Let me reflect back what I heard…” can change an entire conversation.
A Small Experiment (for the Rest of 2025 + Into 2026)
For the next few months, I invite you to try this:
Listen for the human behind the words
Notice tone, body language, and energy- not just statements
Pause before you answer
Take one breath before speaking
Feel into the question- not just the content, but the emotion behind it
Then respond from your heart, not your habits.
Let your answer come from presence, not pressure.
So… What’s Your Perfect Date?
Maybe it is April 25th, not too hot, not too cold, light jacket optional.
Or maybe it’s any moment where you feel seen, heard, grounded, and connected, with yourself or with someone else.
As we close out this year and step into 2026, here’s my wish for all of us:
May our pauses be more intentional.
May our communication be more coherent.
And may our connections be more human, heartfelt, and real.
