Lately, I’ve found myself returning to a simple question: “How can I be a better human – today?” The world can feel noisy. Instead of numbing out or getting swept up in the chaos, I’m choosing a third way; seek humanness. Anchor in compassion. Lead with empathy. Practice kindness in micro-moments. Small acts ripple. Below are five practices I return to when I want to shift from overwhelm to aligned action. Choose one today. Notice how your heart and body respond. Let it become your quiet revolution.
Why “Humanness” Matters
When the headlines feel heavy, when division seems louder than ever, adding heat isn’t our only option. We can water what matters. Choosing humanness and centering in compassion – even in tiny moments – is a deliberate act of hope. It changes our inner state and our shared spaces and we become the change we wish to see in the world.
5 Practices I’m Leaning Into
Below are the practices I’m inviting myself (and you) to try. They’re not grand gestures. They’re small. They’re doable. They add up.
1. Fill Your Feed with Hope
Pick one uplifting documentary, interview, or story this week. I recently watched a Jane Goodall interview on Netflix (after her passing) and her lifelong message: “don’t lose hope.”Let her story remind you what’s possible. Then take one inspired, concrete action.
2. Follow a Daily Kindness Cue
I’m using the Optimistic October calendar by Action for Happiness. Print it, set it as desktop wallpaper, or tape it to your fridge.A simple daily prompt creates steady momentum.
3. Pause into Heart Coherence
Spend 2 minutes daily on Heart-Focused Breathing:
- Focus attention on the area of your heart
- Breathe in and out through your heart or chest area
- Breathe a little slower and deeper than normal – find a rhythm that is comfortable for you
- Optional:Place a hand over your heart to help to feel your breath flowing in and out of your heart space
These few breaths reconnect you inwardly, reset your nervous system and help you find a moment of calm in the storm.
4. Volunteer Locally (Together)
My husband and I are mapping out local organizations where we can serve. Start small: send one inquiry, fill one form, or pencil one hour on your calendar. Action births purpose.
5. Reconnect Your Circles
Reach out to someone today. Book coffee or a lunch date. Or gather a few friends for a nourishing evening together.. We’re wired for connection – make it intentional
Reflection Prompts
Take a moment (pen & paper or in your mind) and reflect:
- When did I feel warmly connected to myself, someone else, or nature today? When have I felt “most human” lately?
- What’s one news source I can replace with a hope-source?
- Which practice above will I commit to this week?
- If I were being the change, what’s today’s smallest step?
Let these questions guide you back toward presence and purpose and into the world as a kinder force.
