Presence + Heart: A “Now Mind” for 2026

January 13, 2026

For 2026, I’m anchoring into two words that feel both simple and profound:

Presence.
Heart.

Recently, I learned something that stopped me in my tracks. One of the Japanese symbols most closely associated with mindfulness is 念 (Nen). It’s made up of two parts:

  • 今 (Ima)– Now. This moment.
  • 心 (Shin / Kokoro)– Heart, mind, spirit.

Together, it points to a “now mind,” guided by heart.

Not perfection.
Not constant calm.
Just a gentle, honest returning, again and again, to here, and to what actually matters.

And honestly? That’s what I want 2026 to be about.

Not forcing a new version of myself.
Not chasing goals born from pressure.
But coming back to the basics, because the basics are where life gets real again.
Where the magic actually is.

The Magic Is Usually Small

I used to think mindfulness had to be big and formal: long meditations, perfect routines, doing it “the right way.”

But more and more, I’m noticing something else.

The magic is usually small.

It’s in the space between an inhale and exhale.
In the silence between notes.
In the softening of your shoulders when you remember you’re allowed to breathe.
In the way light hits a wall at 4:00 pm.
In color. Movement. Texture.
In the moment you come back to your heart and realize… you’re here.

Presence isn’t something you accomplish.
It’s something you practice returning to.

And heart?
Heart is what makes that return meaningful.
Heart is what turns attention into connection.

How I’m Practicing Presence + Heart This Year

One way I’m grounding into these words personally is through an online class in mindful photography.

Not the technical side.
Not f-stops and settings.

This class is about seeing, and it’s shifting something in me.

I always believed that taking pictures meant stepping out of the present moment, like I was interrupting life to capture it. What I’m learning is the opposite.

When I practice mindful photography, I stay with the moment longer. I notice details I would have missed. I let the world meet me in a new way, through light, shadow, color, movement, and stillness.

It’s not about getting the perfect shot.
It’s about being so here that the moment becomes vivid.

And the more I practice seeing like this, the more I realize: the senses are one of the fastest doorways back to now.Back to the breath. Back to the heart space, where we’re not just looking, but feeling.

A Gentle Self-Check: Presence + Heart

If mindfulness is “now mind + heart,” here are a few questions you might sit with this month, no judgment, just curiosity:

  • How often am I physically here, but mentally somewhere else?
  • When I’m with people I love, am I fully with them… or half with my phone, my to-do list, or tomorrow?
  • What helps me return to the present quickly? (Breath? Music? Nature? Touch? Movement?)
  • Where do I feel my heart closing or bracing during the day?
  • What opens my heart, even a little?
  • If my heart chose the pace of my life this month, what would change?
  • What am I ready to stop doing on autopilot?
  • What ordinary moment could I treat as sacred this week?

You don’t need perfect answers.
You just need willingness.

Because every time you notice you’re not present, and return, that is the practice.

An Invitation for January

Goals can be beautiful, especially when they’re rooted in Presence + Heart.

So before mapping out the year… what if you paused long enough to feel what’s true?

One breath.
One honest check-in.
One moment of real attention.

When we start from the inside out, we don’t have to force our way forward. We begin choosing with more clarity, and living with more connection.

If you’re craving more Presence + Heart, and want support practicing this in real life (not just in theory), I’d love to explore what working together could look like.

Here’s to a January that feels grounded, connected, and real.

now mind.
A heart-led year.
A return to the basics, where things soften and make sense.
