Bringing the Magic Home: How to Stay Present After Vacation Ends

March 25, 2026

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens on vacation.

The kind where time slows down.
Where your calendar disappears.
Where you feel more present, more alive, and more connected to yourself than you have in months.

I recently returned from a trip that felt exactly like that.

I was on the other side of the world, literally a day ahead and six hours removed from my normal life. There were no meetings, no expectations, no constant checking in. Just long walks, ocean views, quiet moments, and the simple joy of noticing life again.

I felt rested.
Present.
Alive.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, I had a thought:

How do I bring this feeling home with me?

The Reality of Reentry

If you’ve ever asked yourself that same question, you probably already know the answer.

It doesn’t last as long as we hope.

For me? About a day.

After unpacking and easing back into my routine, I opened my calendar and emails, and just like that, I could feel the familiar pull of everyday life creeping back in.

The pace.
The pressure.
The expectations.

And then something happened on that trip that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

The Question That Stayed With Me

While riding a ferry, a local woman asked me:

“Do you really work all the time in the U.S.?”

I laughed and said, “Yes, that about sums it up.”

Then she asked:

“When do you enjoy life? How do you find balance?”

Simple questions.
But ones that stopped me in my tracks.

Because the truth is, we don’t ask ourselves that enough.

A Different Way to Measure Life

The older I get, the more I believe this:

Life is not just about making a living. It’s about living.

Work matters. Responsibility matters.
But work was never meant to become the center of who we are.

What if we asked each other:

Who are you here to be?

Instead of:

What do you do for a living?

That shift alone changes everything.

How to Bring the Magic Home

The truth is, we don’t need a plane ticket to feel present, connected, or alive.

We just need to choose it, intentionally.

Here are a few simple ways I bring myself back to center:

1. Schedule Time for Yourself

Yes, actually schedule it.

I block “Me Time” on my calendar.
A colleague calls it “CEO Time,” and I love that reminder, we are the CEOs of our own lives.

This time isn’t about productivity.
It’s about listening.

What do I need today?
What is my soul asking for?

2. Leave Space Open

Not every moment needs to be filled.

I try to keep Sundays open, no plans, no pressure.
Just space to breathe, rest, or follow what feels right in the moment.

3. Check In With Yourself Daily

You don’t need an hour to reset.

Sometimes a simple pause is enough:

Am I tired?
Hungry?
Emotionally drained?

Your body often knows before your mind does.

4. Schedule Joy Before Life Fills the Space

If you don’t plan joy, work will take its place.

Especially as a business owner, I know the work is never “done.”
So I intentionally plan things that feel fun, nourishing, and life-giving.

A Gentle Reminder

You don’t have to wait for your next vacation to feel like yourself again.

You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to postpone joy.

Small moments of presence matter.

And over time, those small moments create a life that feels full, not just busy.

My Wish for You

Work to live.
Don’t live to work.

Let yourself be a priority.
Let enjoyment exist in your life now, not someday.

And wherever you are today, I hope you find a way to bring a little of the magic home.
