Before You Rush Into 2026…Pause and Look Back to reflect

December 29, 2025

Happy New Year – reflect on how far you have come vs pushing forward and making all your 2026 Goals. Here is an idea

Before You Rush Into 2026…Pause and Look Back

As we stand at the edge of a new year, it’s so tempting to jump straight into planning mode:

New goals.
New habits.
New “this is the year I finally…” lists.

And while I love a good fresh-start energy, I also know this:
If we don’t pause to honor how far we’ve already come, our goals can start to feel like proof that we’re “behind,” instead of a reflection of how much we’re growing.

So before you start plugging away at your 2026 plans, I want to invite you into something quieter and deeper:

Take a breath.
Look back.
Give yourself some credit.

You’ve lived a whole year. That alone is a lot.

You’ve Grown More Than You Think

It’s easy to see the big milestones, new jobs, moves, graduations, launches, losses, relationships beginning or ending.

But growth also hides in the small, ordinary, almost-invisible shifts:

  • The boundary you set that you wouldn’t have set a year ago
  • The conversation you handled with more calm and clarity
  • The way you listened to your body and chose rest instead of pushing through
  • The moment you said “no” to something that wasn’t aligned, even if a part of you still felt guilty
  • The tiny steps you took toward healing, even if things don’t feel “finished” yet

You don’t have to have everything figured out to be proud of yourself.
You just have to be willing to notice: I’m not the same person I was at the start of this year.

And that deserves a high-five, a deep breath, or maybe even a little happy dance in your kitchen.

A Few Questions to Help You Reflect

If you’d like a simple way to look back before you look ahead, here are a few prompts you can sit with:

  • Where did I surprise myself this year?
  • What hard thing did I walk through that I’m still standing after?
  • Where did I choose alignment over people-pleasing or “shoulds”?
  • What relationships, practices, or spaces supported my well-being the most?
  • What did I let go of that no longer fit who I’m becoming?

You can journal on these, talk them through with a friend, or just take a quiet moment with a cup of tea and let your mind wander.

The goal isn’t perfection or a neat little summary.
The goal is recognition, to say to yourself:

“I’ve grown. I’ve learned. I’ve shown up the best I could with what I had.”

Choosing a Word for 2026

I also love choosing a word of the year, a simple, grounding word to anchor into as you move through the next twelve months.

Your word isn’t a goal or a resolution.
It’s more like a gentle compass.

Maybe your word for 2026 is something like:

  • Trust
  • Alignment
  • Steady
  • Joy
  • Courage
  • Ease
  • Nourish

There’s no “right” word. Just a word that feels like a soft yes in your body.
A word that says, “This is the energy I want more of in my life.”

I’m working on my own word for 2026 and will share it as we step into January. I’m letting it come to me slowly, noticing which themes keep showing up in my conversations, reflections, and sessions with clients.

Give Yourself That High-Five

Before you map out your next big thing, take a moment this week to:

  • Look back at where you started 2025
  • Acknowledge what you navigated, created, survived, and softened into
  • Celebrate at least one way you showed up for yourself

You have done a lot of growing, on the outside and on the inside.
You’ve carried a lot.
You’ve kept going, even on the days that felt messy or unclear.

So yes, dream about 2026.
Yes, set goals and intentions if that feels supportive.

But also:
Pause. Reflect. And give yourself the recognition you deserve.

You’ve come so much farther than you realize.
And that, all by itself, is worth celebrating.
